Icarus Statement

Since I was a little girl I have loved classical mythology. These ancient stories captivated me with their fundamental truth and mystery.

The myth of Icarus is one of my favorites.

Thousands of years in the telling, the myth of Icarus recounts a familiar story of the follies of youth: exuberance, thrill and risk-taking with the warnings of fathers (and mothers) disregarded in the shining moment.
Icarus is all around us everyday.

In the classic myth, Icarus leaves his island prison with the fabulous wings
his father made and presented to him as the vehicle of his escape.
Today Icarus embarks on that journey into the future in the fabulous
vehicles of the fathers, capable of flying higher and faster, in a way,
than the youth of any previous generation.

What happens when Icarus exceeds his limits today? When the journey comes
to an abrupt and terrifying end?

We call 911.

We call in the heroes who will perform myth-worthy, death-defying feats (or not)
as the drama is played out over and over again.
Now it is the hero, the EMT, who pushes the limits with fabulous inventions
lifting a fallen Icarus back into the light.

And there we are, going by, standing at the edge, trying to get a glimpse,
wanting to look, not sure we want to see,
