Of course, some times our experiments went too far and we had to rescue pages from the brink of disaster. Some of the rescues became favorites. Other times there was simply no possibility of resurrection.

In the end we finished 45 Claude Lorrains. We select pieces for exhibit in a voting process. The result is a diverse and nuanced conversation about ideas, subject matter and materials.

What We Did

We cut up the book and randomly distributed the illustrated pages amongst ourselves.

We set up a few rules: the piece had to remain the size of the page, 11.5 x 9.5 inches, some part of the Claude Lorrain image had to be present in the final piece and it had to be essentially two dimensional.

Then we went to work on those pages, each making some kind of response or change to Lorrain’s drawing - a development in composition, a social comment or radical transformation.  Some pieces we traded amongst ourselves for others to work on and some we kept for ourselves alone.
